The Knitter

I am a wife of a talented journalist and a mother of an adorable baby boy. I am a knitter because I love manipulating things as simple as pieces of wood and bits of string into a warm and beautiful garment that, as you wear the garment, embraces you and makes you feel loved and cozy.  I am a designer because I found I had a habit of dreaming up a sweater, looking for a pattern to match the dream and never finding that pattern.

When I am not designing new sweaters I can be found taking my little boy on walks, cooking dinner parties for my family and friends or sipping tea in a quiet nook, knitting and listening to an audiobook.

I didn’t always knit and design. I used to be a court reporter, working downtown Indianapolis. At that time knitting was an escape, although I rarely had time to knit. I was happy and yet I was unhappy. I was happy knowing I was good at what I did. I made clients happy with my work. I made my firm happy. But I was unhappy because I rarely had time to be with my friends, my husband and my family. I felt rushed, busy, always running from one job to the next. Was this what life was about? Living  and working for people who wouldn’t even remember you in a week’s time?

Giving up my job meant loosing my identity as a career woman. But perhaps I would discover a new woman under the surface.

I finally decided I wanted to make memories with my family rather than money for myself. With my husband’s blessing I left my stiletto heels, my depositions and my rat-race.

Without planning out what would happen next I woke up one day and realized I had started my own little knitting business from home, designing patterns for knitters and editing patterns for yarn companies. I was immersed in what I loved best and surrounded by people I loved best.

  2. I am so jealous that you took the plunge and stopped working. I don’t think that I can do that; I need to educate America. God bless you in all that you do, and enjoy your knitting. :^)
